Aspiring health insurance navigators must complete mandatory web training and certification.
Navigators need excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to engage consumers and explain available health care options. Many navigators go out into the community to encourage and assist in insurance enrollment and must present a professional and appropriate appearance and gain the trust of consumers. Navigators will benefit from experience with under-served populations and knowledge of diverse community needs.
In certain markets, bilingual navigators will be more employable. Individuals serving as navigators must have high ethical standards and understand their obligation to maintain confidentiality. They must also have experience in navigating the Internet and the Health Insurance Marketplace Web site (https://www.healthcare.gov) and be able to input data into applicable computer databases. Knowledge of public health programs such as Medicaid and child health programs will be beneficial.
