Marble Setters, Tile Setters, and Terrazzo Workers

Outlook

Employment opportunities for tile and stone setters are expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Growth will result from more construction of shopping malls, hospitals, schools, restaurants, government buildings, high-end homes, and other structures in which tile and marble are used extensively. Growth may be offset somewhat by the increasing use of tile and marble substitutes, such as plastic or fiberglass tub and shower enclosures and resilient flooring.

Employment for terrazzo workers is expected to decline by 8 percent from 2023 through 2033. The DOL says that job opportunities are "expected to decline due to the increased installation of polished concrete, which will shift some work from terrazzo workers to cement masons and concrete finishers." Despite this prediction, there should continue to be some demand for terrazzo workers in warm-weather states like California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida.

Marble setters, tile setters, and terrazzo workers will find better employment opportunities in more populated urban and suburban areas where more buildings are being constructed and remodeled. Workers may find that work is steadier in climates that allow year-round construction. Employment of these types of workers may also fluctuate depending upon the state of the economy. During a strong economy, building construction increases and demand for marble and tile setters and terrazzo workers increases. Those with prior experience and certification will have improved job prospects.
