The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median annual salary for elementary school teachers was $63,680 in May 2023. The lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $46,960; the highest paid 10 percent earned $104,440 or more. Middle school teachers earned median salaries of $64,290 with the lowest 10 percent earning $47,490 or less and the highest 10 percent earning $104,410 or more. Secondary school teachers had median earnings of $65,220. Ten percent earned $48,040 or less, and 10 percent earned $106,380 or more annually.

Most teachers are contracted to work nine months out of the year, though some contracts are made for 10 months or a full year. In most cases, teachers have the option of prorating their salary up to 52 weeks. Teachers can also supplement their earnings through teaching summer classes, coaching sports, sponsoring a club, or other extracurricular work.

Depending on the state, teachers usually receive a retirement plan, sick leave, and health and life insurance. Some systems grant teachers sabbatical leave.
