Solar Energy Sales Representatives

Education and Training Requirements

High School

Solar energy sales representatives and assessors must have an understanding of solar energy and solar systems and equipment as well as business and customer service skills. A well-rounded education is a good foundation for this profession. Take classes in math, science, environmental science, business, computer science, and English. Public speaking classes will help hone communication and persuasion skills that are important in sales jobs. Shop classes can also be helpful for learning basic machinery and technical skills, which could come in handy while on the job.

Postsecondary Education

Most employers prefer to hire solar sales representatives and assessors who have a bachelor's degree. Majors for this job vary. Coursework that is helpful covers biology, chemistry, engineering, computers, business, mathematics, marketing, economics, communications, and English. Foreign language classes can also be helpful for improving sales.

A small, but growing, number of colleges offer classes, certificates, and degrees in renewable energy. Visit the following Web sites for lists of programs: https://www.energy.gov/eere/education/education-homepage and https://irecusa.org/workforce-development.
