High School
In high school take courses in mathematics (especially algebra), computer science, and physics to build your skills. In addition, operators must be strong communicators, so you should take speech, English, and writing classes.
Postsecondary Education
Aspiring space systems operators who train for positions with the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force complete 7.5 weeks of basic military training and 75 days of training at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Those who finish the training program earn academic credits that can be used toward the completion of an intelligence studies and technology associate’s degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Some space systems operators train for the field by earning a college degree in space operations, engineering, physics, computer science, or a related field. Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University offers a bachelor of science in space operations” which “focuses on mission operations, payload integration, space research, human factors, and space policy.” Visit https://erau.edu/degrees/bachelor/space-operations to learn more about the program.
Certification
Tonex, a private provider of aerospace training, offers a two-day space operations specialist course that features the following components: Fundamentals of Space Operations; Satellite Systems and Operations; Space Situational Awareness; Space Regulations and Policy; Risk Management in Space Operations; and Collaboration and Communication in Space Operations. Those who complete the course receive a certificate. Visit https://www.tonex.com/training-courses/space-operations-specialist-scos for more information.
Some colleges and universities offer certificates in space operations. For example, the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs offers a space operations graduate certificate to students who complete the following courses: Fundamentals of Astronautics; Space Communications; Remote Sensing in Space; Space Policy; and Systems Engineering Processes.
