Employers

Most space systems operators are employed by the U.S. military (primarily the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force), NASA, and intelligence agencies, but they also work for companies such as Boeing, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin.

Starting Out

Many aspiring space systems operators join and then receive training in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force. After completing a service commitment of two or four years, many leave the military for positions with government agencies or companies in the private sector. Others remain in the armed forces and serve until retirement. To enter the military, candidates must take and pass an enlistment test called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and score high on the electrical component.
