Space systems operators perform a wide range of duties based on their employer, training, level of experience, and other factors. Some provide assistance during spacecraft launches and monitor their missions in space. Many monitor and manage the operation of satellites. They use active and passive space surveillance systems to detect, identify, surveil, and in some instances, control low orbiting and deep space satellites. They ensure that the satellites that they are monitoring remain in their proper orbits and trajectories. Operators identify and resolve operational issues or threats (e.g., orbital debris, cyberattacks) and oversee satellite end-of-life testing and disposal.
Space systems operators who serve in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force oversee launch and on-orbit operations for military satellites, operate defensive and offensive space control systems, and detect and track tactical and sea- or and-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.
All space systems operators regularly test and evaluate space control systems to ensure operational readiness. They develop new space operational procedures to improve their department’s performance, and work closely with software developers, engineers, and others to identify, develop, and set-up new space surveillance technologies. Some develop and oversee training programs for new operators.
