Special Education Teachers

Unions and Associations

Most special education teachers belong to unions, which help them secure fair working hours, salaries, and working conditions. Teachers may join unions such as the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. Many special education teachers are members of the National Association of Special Education Teachers and the American Academy of Special Education Professionals (AASEP). The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and the AASEP offer certification to special education teachers. The Childhood Education International provides research about the field. Other useful organizations include the Council for Exceptional Children and the Council of Administrators of Special Education.
