Strength and Conditioning Coaches

Strength and conditioning coaching evolved as a distinct career path in the 1970s when collegiate and professional sports programs began looking for ways to increase the performance and competitiveness of their athletes. Soon after, high schools, as well as individual athletes, also began seeking the services of strength and conditioning coaches to help improve athletic performance. Today, strength and conditioning coaches are key members of athletic programs.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association was formed in 1978 to represent the professional interests of strength and conditioning coaches at all levels. It has more than 60,000 members.

The Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association was founded in 2000. While it primarily represents coaches at the collegiate level, it also offers membership to coaches of professional athletic teams.
