Unions and Associations

While union membership may not always be required, many actors find it advantageous to belong to a union that covers their particular field of performing arts. These organizations include the Actors' Equity Association (stage) and SAG-AFTRA (motion pictures, television, recording, and radio). In addition, some actors may benefit from membership in the American Guild of Variety Artists (nightclubs, and so on) or the American Guild of Musical Artists (opera and ballet). Performers on the Broadway stages must be members of the Actors' Equity Association before being cast.
