While union membership is not a requirement for auto mechanics, many belong to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Most mechanics who are union members work for large automobile dealers, trucking companies, and bus lines.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence provides certification to automobile collision repairers. The ASE Education Foundation and the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges accredit auto repair training programs. The Auto Care Association represents repair shops, parts stores, and distribution outlets. Other helpful organizations include the Automotive Service Association, National Automobile Dealers Association, and the Renewable Fuels Association.
