Copy Editors

Outlook

Employment of all editors will decline by 2 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Competition for those jobs will remain intense, since so many people want to enter the field. There will be more job opportunities for copy editors in Internet publishing, versus print media, as online publishing and services continue to grow. Many companies now use social media, such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), as well as blogs and text messages to communicate with their audience. They may hire writers and editors to create and review content. Advertising and public relations will also provide employment opportunities. A fairly large number of positions—both full time and freelance—become available when experienced copy editors leave the business for other fields.

By the mid-2020s, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) was having a significant impact on editors and content creators. The use of related tools, and the manner in which they were being developed, presented new concerns and challenges for industry professionals. For example, in October 2023 the News Media Alliance issued a white paper titled, "How the Pervasive Copying of Expressive Works to Train and Fuel Generative Artificial Intelligence Systems Is Copyright Infringement and Not a Fair Use."
