Dairy Products Manufacturing Workers

Work Environment

Because of the strict health codes and sanitary standards to which they must adhere, dairy plants are generally clean, well-ventilated workplaces, equipped with modern, well-maintained machines. When workplace safety rules are followed, dairy processing plants are not hazardous places to work.

Workers in this industry generally report for work as early as 6:00 A.M., with shifts ending around three in the afternoon. Dairy farmers and others may start work as early as four or five in the morning. People involved in the agriculture industry often work very long hours, often more than 12 hours per day. Many dairy products workers stand during most of their workday. In some positions the work is very repetitive. Although the milk itself is generally transported from tank to tank via pipelines, some workers have to lift and carry other heavy items, such as cartons of flavoring, emulsifier, chemical additives, and finished products like cheese. To clean vats and other equipment, some workers have to get inside storage tanks and spray the walls with hot water, chemicals, or live steam.

Dairy workers may also be exposed to health risks associated with working with animals and animal products, such as bacteria and other organisms.
