Journalism Teachers

Outlook

Employment opportunities for high school teachers, including journalism teachers, are expected to decline by 1 percent from 2023 through 2033, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). "Projected declines over the decade in both the school-aged demographic and student enrollment should constrain demand for high school teachers," according to the OOH. The need to replace retiring teachers will provide opportunities nationwide, but the demand will vary widely depending on geographic area. Inner-city schools characterized by poor working conditions and low salaries often suffer a shortage of teachers, as do remote, rural areas.

The OOH predicts that employment for college communications professors will grow about as fast as the average for all careers through 2033. College enrollment is projected to grow due to an increased number of 18- to 24-year-olds, an increased number of adults returning to college, and an increased number of foreign-born students, thus requiring the need for more college and university professors. Retirement of current faculty members will also provide job openings. However it is predicted that many of the positions will be part time, and competition for full-time, tenure-track positions at four-year schools will be very strong.
