Medical Ethicists

Exploring This Job

Sometimes it is possible for high school students to get personal exposure to the work of medical ethicists. Perhaps there is a medical ethicist in your community who would be willing to offer you an opportunity to shadow them while they work. If not, there may be opportunities to do volunteer work at a hospital, which would give you an idea of the kinds of issues that arise in medical settings. You might be able to interview the chair of a hospital ethics committee or other people who are involved in the field. Keep up to date on the latest developments and controversies in medical ethics by reading articles and blogs on bioethics-related Web sites, such as Bioethics.net, as well as reading newspapers, magazines, and watching news programs on television.
