Remote patient monitoring (RPM) technology is a form of telehealth that uses digital devices to collect and send patient data. This data is often recorded and sent automatically. In some cases, medical professionals ask the patient to self-test and submit the health data or click a digital button on a wearable or other device when they are experiencing symptoms (such as dizziness or a racing heart). Common RPM devices include blood pressure kits, glucometers, pulse oximeters, electrocardiogram systems, peak flow meters, wearable medical technologies (e.g., smartwatches, fitness trackers), remote patient thermometers, and wireless scales.

Remote patient monitoring specialists coordinate the set-up of RPM technology and educate patients regarding its use. They evaluate data once it is received from patients to manage care and identify potential health risks. Specialists work closely with various healthcare professionals regarding patient care and therapy. Many RPM specialists have healthcare backgrounds; these professionals provide clinical care to patients who are using RPM devices. Remote patient monitoring specialists may also be known as remote care specialists, virtual care specialists, and virtual patient care specialists.
