Holistic Physicians

Overview

Holistic physicians are licensed medical doctors (doctors of medicine, or M.D.'s, or doctors of osteopathy, D.O.'s) who embrace the philosophy of treating the patient as a whole person. Their goal is to help the individual achieve maximum well-being in mind, body, and spirit. Holistic medicine emphasizes a cooperative relationship between physician and patient and focuses on educating patients in taking responsibility for their lives and their health. Holistic physicians use many approaches to diagnosis and treatment, including alternative approaches, such as acupuncture, meditation, nutritional counseling, and lifestyle changes. They also prescribe drugs and surgery when a less invasive treatment cannot be found. Holistic physicians are part of the rapidly growing field of complementary and alternative health care practitioners. Most work in private practice or in alternative health clinics. They are also known as integrative medicine physicians.
