Community Health Workers

Overview

Community health workers are front-line, allied health professionals who perform a wide range of duties (e.g., health promotion, education, case management, counseling, advocacy) in underserved communities in rural, suburban, and urban areas. They have educational backgrounds that range from a high school diploma to a postsecondary certificate or degree. Community health workers (CHWs) are known by many different titles, including community health representative, lay health worker, health navigator, community health advisor, peer health promoter, and community health outreach worker. Approximately 63,400 CHWs are employed in the United States.
