Overview

Anesthesiologist assistants work under the direction of anesthesiologists, who plan, perform, and maintain patients' anesthesia during surgical, obstetric, or other medical procedures. Anesthesiologist assistants take patients' histories, perform exams, and prepare patients for surgeries. They monitor patients' health and comfort throughout surgical procedures. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 118,800 physician assistants, including anesthesiologist assistants, employed in the United States.
