Although forms of telehealth have been provided for many years by radio (1920s), telephone (1948), and two-way closed-circuit microwave television (1959), it was not until the past decade or so that this technology (including RPM systems) has become a major component of the healthcare system. The invention of the Internet, video conferencing systems, and wearable technology, as well as the emergence of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), have fueled the use of telehealth technology (including RPM systems). Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in late 2019, fueled strong demand for telehealth services. In 2023, Vivalink (a digital healthcare solutions provider) reported that 81 percent of clinicians it surveyed were currently using RPM on patients, a 305 percent increase from 2021. As the use of telehealth technology has increased, a need has emerged for RPM specialists and other telehealth specialists to develop and set-up of these systems, as well as to work with remote patients and analyze health data.
