Tattoo Artists

Employment Prospects

Employers

Tattoo artists are employed by tattoo shops. Some launch their own tattoo businesses. Some tattoo artists also work as art teachers or instructors at tattoo schools.

Starting Out

Most people break into the field after first working as apprentices at tattoo shops, although some train at a tattoo school. An apprentice gradually obtains experience and skill and is eventually allowed (under close supervision) to give basic tattoos to customers. During their training, apprentices build a portfolio of their best work, which they show to potential employers. An apprentice may also be offered a full-time position at the shop where they completed their apprenticeship. Job leads are typically found via word-of-mouth, through social media, and at the Web sites of tattoo shops.
