Art Teachers

Outlook

Employment opportunities for elementary, middle school teachers, and high school teachers are expected to have little or no change through 2032, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The need to replace retiring teachers will provide many opportunities nationwide. Student enrollment in elementary and secondary schools is projected to decrease in the coming years, but the number of classes is expected to stay the same, with parents and teachers supporting smaller class sizes. Employment of teachers will depend on the budgets of state and local governments. The demand for art teachers is usually much lower than it is for most other subjects, however, because schools hire a limited number of art faculty. Additionally, there is a surplus of talented, qualified art professionals wanting to get into teaching. Positions in inner-city schools or rural areas may be easier to find than in suburban school districts. Art teachers who teach self-enrichment classes at private educational institutions and in other settings should have slightly better employment opportunities—although these positions are typically part time and offer lower salaries than positions in formal school settings.
