Most baristas work in clean, well-lighted environments with modern equipment. Work hazards still exist, however, such as falls on slippery floors, burns from steam and heat, and cuts from knives or glassware. The job requires long hours of standing and walking. Many cafes and restaurants are temperature controlled but if the air-conditioner breaks down, for example, baristas may have to work through a day or two of extreme heat until it is repaired.
Baristas may work full time, with hours that vary from daytime to evening. Their shifts may also vary, with some early morning days mixed with several late afternoon into evening hours. College students appreciate these types of hours because it helps with their school schedules.
Many baristas also work over the weekends and holidays, with holidays rotated among other workers to balance things out. At least one day off per week is scheduled. Employment benefits for baristas usually include discounted or free beverages and meals during the hours when they work. Their employer often furnishes work uniforms. Other benefits may include bonuses, stock options, and health care coverage. For instance, Starbucks offers these and other perks to employees who work more than 20 hours per week.
Morning and lunch hours are typically hectic, and customers are not always patient and kind. Baristas need to remain calm, polite, and professional when dealing with these stressful situations. Teamwork is also important, as each staff member is assigned different tasks during their shift. Each person must be organized, detail oriented, and communicate with others to accomplish goals. A sense of humor also helps to lighten the mood.
