Approximately 11.4 percent of construction workers, including laborers, are union members. Most union laborers belong to the the Laborers' International Union of North America (LiUNA). Among many other services, the union works with employers, seeking to ensure that members receive equitable pay and work in safe conditions. Construction laborers can obtain useful resources (certification, apprenticeship training, continuing education, etc.) from the American Welding Society, NCCER, and the Associated General Contractors of America. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration, a government agency that is responsible for workplace safety, works with community colleges to offer certificate programs to construction laborers.
