According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in general there is a lot of competition for writing and editing jobs, and employment for writers is expected to decline 2 percent through 2029. Job opportunities for science and medical writers should be better in certain industries. For example, employment for those who work in media and communications will grow 3 percent. Continued developments in the medical and scientific fields will drive the need for skilled writers to put complex information in terms that a wide and varied audience can understand. Opportunities will also be best with online publications and services, as these continue to grow. Writers who are well versed with new media will also have an advantage in the job market.
