Continued developments in the medical and scientific fields will drive the need for skilled writers to put complex information in terms that a wide and varied audience can understand. Job opportunities for technical writers are projected to grow 4 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). This is as fast as the average for all occupations. "As product innovation continues, technical writers will be needed to convert complex information into a format that nontechnical users of these products understand," according to the DOL. "The continuing expansion of scientific and technical products and growth in digital product support needs will drive employment demand for these writers. However, employment growth may be slowed by artificial intelligence tools that allow these workers to be more productive."
Employment for writers at newspapers and magazines is expected to decline in the next decade. Opportunities will be best with online publications and services, as these continue to grow. Writers who are well versed with new media will also have an advantage in the job market.
