Ship's Captains

Outlook

The Department of Labor (DOL) forecasts average growth for water transportation workers through 2033. Ship's captains, mates, and pilots of water vessels are expected to experience 2 percent growth in the coming years. "Fluctuations in the demand for bulk commodities, such as iron ore and grain, is a key factor influencing employment of water transportation workers," the DOL explains. "When demand for these commodities is high, the need for these workers increases; when demand slows, so does the need for workers."

Nevertheless, there will be some opportunities for ships captains in the coming years. The DOL expects that approximately 9,700 job openings will exist each year for water transportation workers through 2033. The majority of these will come from workers who leave the industry because of retirement or for other reasons.
