The field of sports publicity is very competitive, and even though it is expanding as more teams and leagues form, it is still difficult to land a job. In 2020 and 2021, the pandemic slowed job growth in the sports industry, due to cancellations and postponements of sports events. Post pandemic, the public's demand for sports has surged and growth in the sports field is expected to continue. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of public relations specialists, including sports publicists, will grow faster than the average for all careers, by 6 percent, through 2033. The number of applicants with degrees in the communications fields (journalism, public relations, and advertising) is expected to exceed the number of job openings. Sports publicists with strong knowledge of social media and who keep up with the latest communications technologies will continue to be in demand in the the coming years.
