The field of sports publicity is very competitive, and even though it is expanding as more teams and leagues form, it is still difficult to land a job. Most recently, the coronavirus pandemic has altered the sports industry overall, with many games and competitions postponed or cancelled. Those sports that have resumed are being conducted in limited capacity, with few if any fans in attendance, and with new protocols to protect people's health. Sports publicists are conducting much of their work remotely, via video meetings and chats. Growth in the field is expected to pick up again post pandemic. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment of public relations specialists will grow about as fast as the average for all careers, by 6 percent, through 2028. The number of applicants with degrees in the communications fields (journalism, public relations, and advertising) is expected to exceed the number of job openings. Sports publicists with strong knowledge of social media and who keep up with the latest communications technologies will continue to be in demand in the the coming years.
