High School
In high school, take courses in science (especially biology, chemistry, and biochemistry), computer science, mathematics, English, and communications.
Postsecondary Education
Many biofabrication technicians have associate’s degrees in biological science, bioengineering, or a related field. Some employers require their technicians to have bachelor’s degrees.
Some aspiring technicians prepare for the field via apprenticeships. ARMI | BioFabUSA offers a biofabrication registered apprenticeship program. Participants complete two months of in-person classes at local colleges, which include hands-on laboratory training. They also learn about Good Manufacturing Practice, “a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards,” according to the World Health Organization. In addition, students complete one year of paid on-the-job training. Visit https://www.armiusa.org/biofabusa/education-and-workforce-development/biofabrication-apprenticeship-program for more information.
Certification
Those who apply to ARMI | BioFabUSA’s biofabrication registered apprenticeship program, but who are not admitted, are allowed to attend the program’s classroom and hands-on instruction sessions free of charge. Those who complete the classes and hands-on training will earn a biofabrication certificate.
Certificate programs are also offered by colleges and universities. For example, Compton College (Compton, California) offers a biomanufacturing technician certificate of achievement. To earn the certificate, students must complete the following courses: Introduction to Biotechnology; Techniques in Cell and Molecular Biology; Quality and Regulatory Practices in Biomanufacturing; Technical Communication for Regulated Environments; and Biomanufacturing.
Other Education or Training
Biofabrication technicians must stay up to date regarding new technologies, especially new fabrication techniques. Professional development opportunities are provided by associations such as the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Society, and SME, among other organizations.
