Cooking Instructors

Work Environment

Working hours depend on how many classes the instructor teaches, the type of classes, and other factors. Instructors employed at middle or high schools often have other duties aside from teaching, such as departmental meetings or sponsoring after-school activities and clubs. Culinary instructors employed at the college level also must counsel students, meet with colleagues, and attend conferences.

Culinary instructors are at risk of injuries common to any kitchen such as burns from hot pans and open fires and cuts from sharp knives or utensils. They often wear protective clothing to prevent such injuries. Many culinary instructors use gloves when preparing certain foods and wear sturdy shoes to prevent aches and pains from long hours of standing.
