Growth Hackers

Employment Prospects

Employers

The work of growth hackers is most commonly linked with the start-up community—especially tech start-ups. But they now are employed by almost any company that seeks to quickly increase its customer base and grow revenue. The principles of growth marketing can also be applied to the goals of nonprofit organizations and the public sector, so growth marketers can find job opportunities with nonprofits (including colleges and universities, museums and cultural centers, and charities) and government agencies.

Starting Out

Some people enter the field after first working in traditional marketing positions, and then gradually take on more growth marketing–related responsibilities to obtain experience. They can then transition to growth marketing positions at their firms or other employers. Others enter growth hacking positions directly after college.

Since this field is relatively new and work duties vary by employer, it’s a good idea to study a range of job ads for growth hackers to identify common duties, skills, and educational credentials that are in-demand by employers. If you are deficient in any areas, work to attain the training needed in order to increase your chances of landing a job.

Aspiring and current growth hackers can learn about job leads by using LinkedIn—creating a profile to attract the interest of recruiters, following industry groups, and applying for jobs through the site. Other strategies include attending career fairs and other networking events and contacting companies directly about job openings.
