Sports Agents

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for agents and business managers of artists, performers, and athletes is expected to grow by 10 percent, faster than the average for all careers, through 2028. The coronavirus pandemic has stalled the sport industry, with many sports teams either in lock-down or with competitions limited to fewer teams and fewer locations. Later in 2021, when the pandemic comes to an end and sports can fully resume, employment growth for sports professionals will pick up. The sports industry will thrive and there is nothing to suggest that the public's interest in it will dwindle. The increasing popularity of women's sports leagues, such as the Women's National Basketball Association, also accounts for the rapid growth in this field. Also, as cable television brings greater choices to the viewer, it is possible that less-publicized sports will gain in popularity through the increased exposure, thus breathing life and revenues into those sports and creating new demand.

It's important to note that the number of sports agents is very small, and it is extremely difficult to build a lucrative career representing star athletes. Agents with extensive experience and graduate-level training in business, finance, or law will have the best job prospects.
