Unions and Associations

Unions were once prevalent among barbers, but they are becoming less common, especially in rural areas. Today there are fewer barbers in the workforce than there were decades ago, and a large percentage of them are self-employed. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union is the principal union that organizes barbers. The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences accredits barber training programs. The National Association of Barber Boards of America seeks to maintain professional standards in the barber industry. Associated Hair Professionals offers membership for students and established barbers.
