Certification or Licensing
The Ecological Society of America offers professional certification at four levels: ecologist in training, associate ecologist, ecologist, and senior ecologist. A candidate's certification level will depend on the amount of education and professional experience he or she has. The society encourages certification as a way to enhance ecologists' professional standing in the field.
The Society for Ecological Restoration offers the certified ecological restoration practitioner-in-training and certified ecological restoration practitioner credentials to applicants who meet experience and educational requirements.
Other professional associations that provide certification programs for environmental science professionals include the National Association of Environmental Professionals and the Soil Science Society of America.
