Landscapers

Work Environment

Landscapers spend much of their time outside. Most of the outdoor work is done during daylight hours, but work takes place all year round in all types of weather conditions. Most people in the field work 37 to 40 hours a week, but overtime is especially likely during the summer months when landscapers take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather. Workweeks may be shorter during the winter. Weekend work is highly likely.

Much of the work can be physically demanding and most of it is performed outdoors in one extreme or another. Workers shovel dirt, trim bushes and trees, constantly bend down to plant flowers and shrubbery, and may have to climb ladders or the tree itself to prune branches or diagnose a problem. There is some risk of injury using planting and pruning machinery and some risk of illness from handling and breathing pesticides, but proper precautions should limit any job-related hazards.
