Little or no change in employment is expected for self-employed grounds maintenance workers from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Despite this prediction, landscaping services is a major employment sector and revenue generator, and there will continue to be many opportunities for skilled horticultural professionals with an entrepreneurial mindset. Nearly 1.3 million grounds maintenance workers are employed in the United States (according to the DOL), and revenue reached $154.2 billion in 2023, according to IBISWorld.
The sale of lawn care products is expected to grow as more houses are built and more people recognize the importance of quality lawn care. The Environmental Protection Agency promotes the environmental benefits of a healthy lawn, emphasizing that healthy grass is not only attractive, but controls dust and pollen, provides oxygen, and improves the quality of groundwater. More people now recognize that a nice lawn can increase home value by as much as 20 percent, according to studies.
Technological developments will also aid the industry. With better, more economical equipment, lawn care professionals can do more specialized work in less time, allowing them to keep their service fees low.
