Most teachers are contracted to work nine months out of the year, though some contracts are made for a full 12 months. When regular school is not in session, teachers are usually expected to conduct summer teaching, planning, or other school-related work.
The median annual salary for middle school teachers was $64,290 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $47,490, and the highest 10 percent made $104,410 or more annually. The median annual salary of high school teachers was $65,220 in May 2023. The lowest paid 10 percent of these teachers earned less than $48,040, and the top 10 percent made $106,380 or more per year. Median annual earnings for postsecondary math teachers were $81,020 in 2023.
Teachers can also supplement their earnings through teaching summer classes, coaching sports, sponsoring a club, or other extracurricular work. Unions such as the American Federation of Teachers or the National Education Association negotiate with schools over contract conditions such as wages, hours, and benefits. Depending on the state, teachers usually receive a retirement plan, sick leave, and health and life insurance. Some systems grant teachers sabbatical leave.
