Greek mathematicians in the sixth century B.C. helped to establish some of the basic laws and principles that govern mathematics today. They applied reason to write up proofs supporting geometric theorems. These theories were written in simple generalized form, using variables to represent "unknowns." The Pythagorean theorem (a2+ b2 = c2) is an example of early mathematic discovery.
The Indians and Persians developed the Arabic numbering system based on the number 10. This system was adopted by traveling traders and spread through Europe and eventually America. Principles of geometry and trigonometry were further developed and applied to navigation and surveying, resulting in great advances in these areas.
Today, new discoveries are as common in mathematics as new problems. The current wide scope of math has led to many advances in science, technology, and computer science in the last century.
