Editorial Assistants

Outlook

The publishing industry was hit hard by the last economic recession, resulting in several years of unfavorable job growth for editorial careers. Most recently, the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted most businesses in the U.S. and around the world. Newspapers, magazines, book publishers, and other media companies have had their employees working remotely or onsite on staggered schedules to reduce crowding. Some companies have furloughed workers and reduced staff. Through 2021, employment in the editorial assistant field is expected to be slow. Editorial assistants with experience in digital media will be in demand, however, in a variety of industries in the next decade, as more companies create a stronger Web presence. Editorial assistants with strong technology skills will be needed to help organize and shape content for online publishing. Competition for these jobs will remain intense, since so many people want to enter the field.
