The publishing industry was hit hard by the last economic recession, resulting in several years of unfavorable job growth for editorial careers. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for the higher-level, but related, career of editor is expected to decline 2 percent through 2033. As a result, employment for editorial assistants is expected to be only fair.

However, editorial assistants with experience in digital media will be in demand in a variety of industries in the next decade, as more companies create a stronger Web presence. Editorial assistants with strong technology skills will be needed to help organize and shape content for online publishing. Competition for these jobs will remain intense, since so many people want to enter the field.
