Salaries and hourly rates for environmental consultants vary widely according to experience, specialization, education, and employer. Many environmental consultants are employed by management consulting firms. Management consultants who worked for management, scientific, and technical consulting services firms had mean annual earnings of $104,500 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Salaries ranged from less than $57,840 to $172,280 or more.

Many consultants can earn between $400 and $1,000 per day. Plunkett Research, Ltd. reports that top consultants employed at firms such as the Boston Consulting Group bill clients as much as $5,000 daily, plus expenses.

Full-time consultants may receive a variety of benefits, which can include paid holidays, vacations, and sick and personal days; medical, dental, and life insurance; profit-sharing plans; 401(k) plans; retirement and pension plans; and educational-assistance programs. Self-employed environmental consultants must provide their own benefits.
