Generally, earnings for HIV/AIDS counselors and case managers are similar to those for other counselors and social workers. Salaries can vary, however, depending on the experience and education of the individual and the location, size, and funding source of the employer.

HIV/AIDS counselors earned median annual salaries of $59,674 in 2024, according to GlassDoor.com. Salaries ranged from less than $47,000 to $77,000 or more.

Mental health counselors who worked in individual and family services earned mean annual salaries of $58,210 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Salaries ranged from less than $36,700 to $89,920 or more. Counselors who worked in outpatient care centers earned an average salary of $58,480, while those employed by local government agencies earned $68,830.

The DOL reports that healthcare social workers had median yearly earnings of $62,940 in May 2023. The lowest paid 10 percent made less than $41,840 per year, while the highest paid 10 percent earned more than $97,790.

In addition to salary, most HIV/AIDS counselors and case managers receive a benefits package that includes paid vacations, holidays, and sick time, medical insurance, and sometimes a retirement plan.
