Over the years, people have sought to improve the "look" of their homes in order to increase their chances of selling their properties, but home staging as an occupational field did not develop until the early 1970s. Barb Schwarz, a real estate agent in Bellevue, Washington, identified a need for buyers to improve the look of their homes to prepare them for sale. She created the career of home staging and developed educational, certification, and professional standards for the field.
