Marine Engineers

Outlook

Employment for marine engineers is expected to grow faster than the average for all careers through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). There will be good opportunities for marine engineers because a limited number of students pursue study in the field and replacement workers will be needed when existing engineers retire or leave the field for other reasons.

Job opportunities for marine engineers will benefit from a growing focus on sustainability. "Marine engineers and naval architects are expected to be needed to help design ships and port facilities that meet increasingly strict international emissions standards," according to the DOL. "In addition, as offshore wind energy projects become more feasible, marine engineers and naval architects are expected to be needed to provide expertise for the construction of wind platforms. As development continues on our nation’s coastlines, there will also be a need for coastal engineers to help address problems with erosion, pollution, and waste disposal.
