Employment for marine engineers is expected to grow faster than the average for all careers through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). There will be good opportunities for marine engineers because a limited number of students pursue study in the field and replacement workers will be needed when existing engineers retire or leave the field for other reasons.
Job opportunities for marine engineers who specialize in designing ships that carry energy like oil will be strong, and there will also be a demand for engineers who can create new pollution control equipment for existing ships. The growth of international overseas transportation of liquefied natural gas will also increase the need for marine engineers to work on ship crews, according to the DOL. As development continues on our nation’s coastlines, there will also be a need for coastal engineers to help address problems with erosion, pollution, and waste disposal.
