A talented climate scientist with strong leadership and organizational skills may be promoted to the position of lead scientist, who oversees the work of other scientists, as well as research assistants, science technicians, and other lower-level workers. In this position, they interact closely with the program manager to ensure that research goals are met. Some climate scientists choose to work as both researchers and as college environmental science professors or transition away from applied research to academia. Others launch their own consulting firms and provide their expertise to government agencies, insurance companies, and renewable and traditional energy companies.
