Climate Scientists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Low-level climate science research positions are available to recent college graduates who have a bachelor’s degree and who have completed at least one climate science–related internship or other experiential learning opportunity. But the best jobs are open to those with at least a master’s degrees and field experience obtained through fellowships, internships, and related activities.

Climate scientists must have expertise in the use of tools and equipment that collect and monitor meteorological conditions and knowledge of advanced data analysis and integration techniques and computer modeling software. In order to be a successful researcher, scientists must have an inquisitive nature, a detail-oriented and organized personality, and excellent analytical skills. They also must be open to the ideas of others and be able to work collaboratively with other scientists, technicians, managers, and others. Scientists must be excellent communicators in order to effectively share their research with colleagues, elected officials, the media, and the general public. Since climate science (specifically global warming and its effects on the environment) remains a hotly contested issue in some circles, climate scientists must be extremely ethical and transparent in their work.
