Climate Scientists

Unions and Associations

Some climate scientists are represented by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers and other unions, but the majority of scientists are not union members. Many climate scientists become members of professional associations, which represent workers in a particular specialty (chemists, ecologists, environmental engineers) or general field (environmental science). Members of these associations share their research and exchange ideas by attending educational conferences, by being published in association-sponsored academic journals, and by participating in formal and informal networking events. Some organizations provide certification programs, and many offer continuing education webinars and in-person classes. Major organizations for environmental science professionals include the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals; Air & Waste Management Association; American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists; American Chemical Society; American Geophysical Union; American Institute of Biological Sciences; Ecological Society of America; Institute of Hazardous Materials Management; Institute of Professional Environmental Practice; Marine Chemist Association; National Association of Environmental Professionals; Soil Science Society of America; and the Water Environment Association. The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) is a “nonprofit consortium of more than 120 North American colleges and universities focused on research and training in the Earth system sciences.”
