Exhibit Designers

Work Environment

Exhibit designers typically work 40 hours per week. Continual challenges and strict deadlines make an exhibit designer's work both creative and demanding. Flexibility in working hours may be a requirement of employment as exhibition installment frequently occurs after museum hours when visitors are not present.

Exhibit designers usually have an office or studio in a private area of the museum, but often must work on the exhibit floors during design planning, installation, and tear down periods. Designers collaborate with curators, museum educators, and conservators throughout the exhibit planning stages to ensure the educational integrity of the exhibition as well as the safety of the objects.

The rewards for designing in a museum environment include a stimulating workplace where the design medium changes continually, the creative application of design expertise, and the satisfaction of educating visitors through the display of artistically and historically significant objects.
