Hazardous Waste Management Technicians

Work Environment

Because of the danger associated with chemical and other types of hazardous waste, technicians must approach potential waste sites with extreme caution. Protective gear is often necessary and can be bulky, interfering with the work. The regulations that control hazardous waste management are complex and increasingly demanding and can slow remediation projects to a frustrating crawl.

Depending on the type of employer, hazardous waste management technicians might do varying degrees of physical labor, work outdoors in all types of weather, and be required to travel considerable distances to investigate and remediate sites. Hazardous waste management technicians work a standard 40-hour week. However, emergency response technicians will stay at critical sites for as long as safety standards permit until the situation is under control. This type of work can account for long hours.
