High School
In high school, take a college preparatory curriculum that includes coursework in marketing, computer science, business, mathematics, psychology, English, speech, and writing. If your school offers a marketing club, get involved.
Postsecondary Education
Marketing automation specialists typically have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, communications, business, or computer science. As part of their training, they also participate in internships or other cooperative education experiences at companies that employ marketing automation professionals.
Certification
Many colleges and universities offer certificate programs in marketing, advertising, brand management, automation, and related fields. For example, Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) offers a certificate in digital marketing strategies: data, automation, AI, and analytics, and Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) offers a certificate in digital marketing. Tech companies also provide certificate programs. Google, for example, offers a digital marketing and e-commerce certificate and other certificates. Programs are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area for information about available programs.
The American Marketing Association offers a variety of certificate programs, including marketing foundations, digital marketing, marketing channels and technology, creativity and innovation, leadership, management skills, leadership for women in business, and data analytics. Visit https://www.ama.org/certificates for more information.
Other Education or Training
Professional associations, colleges and universities, tech companies (such as HubSpot and Salesforce), and for-profit online learning platforms provide continuing education (CE) classes. For example, the American Marketing Association offers Marketing Automation and other marketing-related courses, and the Digital Marketing Institute offers Marketing Automation Fundamentals. Cornell University provides Marketing Automation and AI and other useful educational offerings. Google offers a data analytics certificate. Participating in CE classes is a great way to keep your skills up to date and such courses may be required to renew one’s certification credentials.
