The U.S. Department of Labor reports that median annual earnings of rehabilitation counselors were $63,780 in May 2024. Salaries ranged from less than $42,610 to more than $111,610. Fifty percent of rehabilitation counselors earned between $48,600 and $85,020.

Rehabilitation counselors employed by the federal government generally start at the GS-9 or GS-11 level. In 2025, basic GS-9 salary was $52,205. Those with master's degrees generally began at the GS-11 level, with a salary of $63,163 in 2025. Salaries for federal government workers vary according to the region of the country in which they work. Those working in areas with a higher cost of living receive additional locality pay.

Counselors employed by government and private agencies and institutions generally receive health insurance, pension plans, and other benefits, including vacation, sick, and holiday pay. Self-employed counselors must provide their own benefits.
