Spacecraft Test Technicians

The ideal job candidate has at least one year of experience working in an aerospace, manufacturing, military, or automotive environment, but many people enter the field after obtaining experience via college internships or part-time jobs or via an apprenticeship.

Spacecraft test technicians need a wide range of technical skills. They must know how to use hand and power tools, highly complex testing equipment, and computer-aided design software, as well as be able to read schematics and blueprints.

NASA says that key skills for all of its employees include curiosity, team-oriented personality, a desire for excellence, a passion for exploration, flexibility, and resilience. Other important traits for technicians include strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities; top-notch communication and interpersonal skills; a goal-oriented personality; and a willingness to continue to learn throughout their careers.

Spacecraft test technicians must be in good physical condition because they spend their workdays lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching to do their jobs; walking between work sites; and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds. They also need good hand-eye coordination and normal color vision because they may work with wiring, parts, or other components that are color coded.
